“So is this like acupuncture?”

It’s the most common question we get when we explain how we can use dry needling to help relieve symptoms during our initial stages of treatment.

Dry needling uses the same acupuncture needles used in Chinese medicine. The training required and the theory behind them differentiate acupuncture and dry needling.

Most physiotherapists at EP Physio Plus have completed post-graduate dry-needling courses. ‘Acupuncturists’ train in the art of acupuncture and the Chinese medicine registration act.

Dry needling draws on neurophysiological concepts. Inserting an acupuncture needle into a muscle is a physical stimulus. This may trigger chemical changes in nerve and muscle cells.

Dry needling is one type of hands-on treatment physiotherapists use to change symptoms. Manual therapy creates a window of opportunity for you to move well with fewer symptoms. Feeling and moving better allows you to make other changes for long-term gains.

“Is it safe?”

Dry needling can be appropriate and safe for the majority of people presenting to the clinic. We use short, fine, single-use, stainless steel needles.

The side effects of dry needling are minimal and resolve after a day or two. Bruising or a tiny amount of bleeding (a drop or two) may occur at the site of needling. Treatment-related soreness is common. Heat packs, gentle movement, and drinking lots of water all help.

We will always get your consent. If you have a needle phobia or if dry needling hasn’t suited you, we can discuss other treatment options.

“How do you know where to place the needles?”

We insert needles into the soft tissue of the muscle or at the line of a joint at varying depths. Tissue responsive to dry needling is often where there are active trigger points in a muscle. Muscle sensitivity may develop through trauma, repetitive activity, stress, or fatigue. Sometimes we treat a broader segment of the body around the area of symptoms, not only the muscle that's sore.  Clients often report immediate pain relief and improved range of motion.
