As the old saying goes, “whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right”. We’ve heard endless stories from clients who have been told that they cannot do something because of their ‘dodgy discs’, ‘brittle back’ or their ‘bone on bone’ knee. Hearing these phases can be more crippling than the site of pain itself. These phases can plant the seeds of doubt in your mind causing you to withdraw from activities you love out of fear of causing further damage or pain. This can often lead to clients being increasingly inactive causing further pain and activity limitation!
Once this downward spiral has started, it is difficult to turn it around with many people playing the “it’s just old age” card and do not think much can be done. We’ve seen countless clients of all ages in the clinic who have made awesome positive changes to their physical strength and improved their function. These observations are backed by a recent study (link attached below) that analysed over 70 studies on the effects of resistance training on people 75 years and older. The conclusion from this study was that people 75 years and older can make SIGNIFICANT gains in both muscle strength and size by participating in resistance training (i.e banded exercises, light weights) and we know that this translates to improved function and quality of life.
